Warning: This article contains spoilers for Episode 1 of Treasure Island (2026).

The reveal that Long John Silver has joined the Hispaniola as its cook is the closing turn in the first episode of the 2026 Treasure Island adaptation—and it works because the ship is the last place Jim and Bess Hawkins should feel safe. After Silver has pursued the treasure map and the physical map has been destroyed, Jim’s extraordinary memory becomes the only route to the hidden fortune. The ending puts the person hunting that information within arm’s reach of the people who hold it.

What happens in the Hispaniola cook reveal?

After the Hawkins family reaches the ship, Captain Smollett introduces the newly recruited cook. The man is Silver—the dangerous pirate Jim and Bess hoped to get away from. The episode ends before fully explaining how Silver secured the job or whether he knew in advance that the Hawkins family would be aboard. Those unanswered questions are part of the cliffhanger, not facts the premiere confirms.

The setup is unusually personal: Jim has memorized the map before Bess destroys it, so Silver cannot simply steal the paper and leave. He has a reason to stay close to Jim, while Jim and Bess have every reason to distrust him. The ship’s confined setting turns a treasure hunt into a tense contest over proximity, information and control.

Is it a brilliant twist—or a predictable one?

Our take: it is a strong dramatic hook, even if the surprise depends more on tension than on a complicated mystery. Viewers have already seen Silver pursuing the map, so his arrival aboard the same ship is not an entirely disconnected shock. The effective part is the reversal: the voyage that looked like the Hawkins family’s escape becomes a journey with their enemy embedded in the crew.

That is a useful adaptation choice for television. A season needs conflicts that can continue after the first episode, and Silver’s new position creates a reason for him to watch Jim, manipulate the crew and wait for an opportunity. The reveal also gives the next episode a clear question: how long can Jim and Bess conceal what Jim remembers?

Why Jim’s memory changes the stakes

The series gives Jim a near-photographic memory, a major departure from Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel. In the premiere, the ability turns him into the keeper of the map after the original is burned. That creates an immediate advantage but also makes him a target: knowledge cannot be locked in a chest or handed to a trusted adult when it exists only in his mind.

The idea is potentially compelling because it makes Jim’s central strength double as a vulnerability. The risk is that a heightened ability could solve problems too conveniently if the story does not impose limits or consequences. Episode 2 will need to show whether Jim actively uses his memory to make choices, rather than remaining a prize that other characters pursue.

What the reveal means for Long John Silver

Silver’s cook role places him inside the ship’s daily routine, where he can observe the crew and the Hawkins family without openly taking command. It also sharpens the character’s double nature: he can be useful to the voyage while pursuing an agenda of his own. David Oyelowo’s performance has already drawn attention in early coverage; The Guardian’s review is sharply critical of the adaptation overall while describing Oyelowo as a standout presence.

That contrast matters. A memorable performance and an effective cliffhanger do not automatically make every story choice successful. The series still has to make Silver’s strategy credible and give Jim enough agency to drive the conflict.

What to watch for in Episode 2

  • Whether Silver knew Jim and Bess would be on the Hispaniola, or seized an opportunity after discovering them there.
  • How Jim’s memorized map affects the balance of power aboard the ship.
  • Whether Bess recognises the danger soon enough to protect her son.
  • How Aaron Graham’s motives intersect with Silver’s pursuit of the treasure.

The official Paramount+ UK schedule lists new episodes weekly through November 16, 2026. The US release schedule may differ by service and territory, so viewers should check their local MGM+ listing.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the cook revealed at the end of Treasure Island Episode 1?

The newly introduced cook is Long John Silver, played by David Oyelowo.

Why does Silver want Jim Hawkins?

Jim memorized the treasure map before Bess destroyed the physical copy, making Jim the person who can still recall the route to the treasure.

Does the episode explain how Silver got the job?

No. The premiere reveals Silver’s position aboard the Hispaniola but does not fully explain how he obtained it or whether he anticipated the Hawkins family’s arrival.

Is the cook reveal in Robert Louis Stevenson’s original novel?

The 2026 series substantially reworks the story and character dynamics. Jim’s near-photographic memory is an invention of this adaptation rather than a feature of Stevenson’s original novel.

When is the next episode?

Paramount+ UK says episodes are released weekly, with the six-part series concluding November 16, 2026. Check your local service for the US schedule.
