Tom Cruise’s Digger Gets Royal Premiere Ahead of October U.S. Release

Tom Cruise’s new film Digger had its world premiere in London on September 22, with the event attended by Prince William and Princess Kate.

At the premiere, Cruise described his character, Digger Rockwell, as unlike any role he had previously encountered. Reuters reported that Cruise highlighted a 10-minute monologue filmed in a single take as one of the film’s major performance challenges.

What is Digger about?

Digger follows Rockwell, an extremely powerful oil tycoon whose actions trigger an ecological disaster that threatens to push the world toward nuclear conflict. He then sets out to try to prevent the catastrophe from destroying the planet.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay. The cast also includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons.

When does Digger come out in the U.S.?

The film begins its international theatrical rollout on September 30, 2026. Warner Bros. says Digger will open in U.S. and Canadian theaters and IMAX on October 2.

Why the premiere is drawing attention

The film has kept much of its story under wraps, while its trailer has shown Cruise transformed with gray hair, facial prosthetics and a padded costume for the role. At the premiere, the cast and director also discussed the unusual and highly crafted filmmaking process behind the movie.
