UNITED STATES — For nearly 30 years, one question has followed the Scream franchise more than any other: Is Stu Macher actually dead?
Matthew Lillard spent years telling anyone who would listen that his character survived having a television dropped on his head in the 1996 original. In Scream 7 (released February 2026), the theory finally got its big-screen moment — though not exactly the way longtime fans expected.
How Stu Supposedly Died in 1996
In the climax of the first Scream, Sidney Prescott drops a television on Stu after he and Billy Loomis reveal themselves as the Ghostface killers. The scene was treated as definitive for decades. Original screenwriter Kevin Williamson later confirmed Stu was dead.
Lillard Never Stopped Claiming Stu Survived
Lillard repeatedly said Stu was "definitely alive." He encouraged fans to petition for a return. Those comments kept the theory alive for nearly three decades.
What Actually Happened in Scream 7
Scream 7 brought Lillard back primarily through deepfake technology. An alternate ending that would have shown Stu genuinely alive was shot and tested but did not make the final cut.
Where the Story Stands Now
As of September 2026, the official canon still treats the 1996 death as real. Yet Lillard continues to leave the door open, and Scream 8 is already confirmed.
