Garrett Mitchell delivered the swing that finally put Milwaukee in front, launching a 409-foot solo home run in the sixth inning as the Brewers rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series. The win completed a four-game sweep and sent Milwaukee to the World Series for the first time since 1982.

Quick answer: Mitchell’s leadoff homer against Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott broke a 4-4 tie and gave the Brewers a 5-4 lead. Milwaukee added an insurance run in the ninth and leaned on a dominant bullpen to finish the comeback at Dodger Stadium on October 15.

How Mitchell changed Game 4

Los Angeles looked in control early. Andy Pages drove in a run in the second inning, and Shohei Ohtani followed with a three-run homer that pushed the Dodgers ahead 4-0. Milwaukee had to find a way back against a team trying to extend its run of championship success.

The Brewers began chipping away in the fourth. William Contreras and Jake Bauers doubled, with Bauers’ ground-rule double bringing Milwaukee closer at 4-2. In the fifth, David Hamilton’s RBI single made it 4-3. A bases-loaded walk to Bauers then brought home the tying run, turning a four-run hole into a fresh game.

Mitchell led off the sixth and fell behind 0-2 against Tanner Scott. After working the count full, he drove the next opportunity to center field. The 409-foot shot put Milwaukee ahead for the first time, 5-4, and changed the pressure on both dugouts. MLB’s game video listed the homer at a 105.2 mph exit velocity and a 26-degree launch angle.

The bullpen made the lead hold

A home run created the lead; Milwaukee’s relievers protected it. JoJo Romero helped escape a threat in the sixth, and Aaron Ashby handled the final three innings without allowing a run. The Dodgers had chances to get back into the game, but Milwaukee repeatedly recorded the outs it needed.

Hamilton added the decisive insurance run with a two-out solo homer in the ninth against Edwin Díaz. That made the score 6-4 and gave Ashby a little more room to finish the game. Milwaukee’s comeback was built on more than one big hit: disciplined at-bats, timely contact, aggressive baserunning and late-inning execution all mattered.

Why the sweep matters for Milwaukee

The result carries a remarkable reversal. The Dodgers swept Milwaukee out of the postseason a year earlier; this time, the Brewers swept the same opponent to claim the National League pennant. MLB described the feat as a first in major-league history. Milwaukee’s only previous World Series appearance came in 1982, when the franchise was still in the American League and lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.

Mitchell’s homer will be remembered as the turning point, but it was part of a broader team performance. Jake Bauers helped start the comeback and was later named NLCS Most Valuable Player. Hamilton supplied the ninth-inning cushion, while the bullpen shut the door after the Dodgers’ explosive second inning.

What happens next?

Milwaukee will host the opening game of the World Series on October 23 against the American League champion. As of publication, the ALCS matchup was still being decided between the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays. The Brewers now have a chance to win the franchise’s first World Series title, but the pennant itself ends a 44-year wait for another trip to baseball’s biggest stage.
