Most American Horror Story seasons give their main location a name that already feels cursed. The Murder House. The Hotel Cortez. Miss Robichaux’s Academy. Season 13 goes one step further and names its central building after the angel of the bottomless pit.
The Apollyon is the eerie residential building in New York City where almost everything important in the first three episodes happens. Mr. Nas owns the entire 13th floor. Constance Langdon lives there now. Ben DeSoto takes the night shift there. And by the end of episode 3, the basement is revealed to contain a literal portal to Hell.

Where the Name Comes From
Apollyon is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Abaddon. In the Book of Revelation it is the name of the angel who rules the abyss — the bottomless pit that opens during the end times. Ryan Murphy has never been subtle with biblical references, but naming the building itself after the destroyer is as direct as the show has ever gotten.
Ben notices the strangeness immediately. Most residential buildings in New York skip the 13th floor out of superstition. The Apollyon not only has one — it is the floor that matters most.
Who Lives There
Mr. Nas occupies the entire 13th floor. Constance Langdon works as his daytime caregiver and appears to live on the premises. Ben is hired for the overnight shift after surviving the plane crash. The previous night caregiver, Constance casually mentions, died by suicide.
The building also has a doorman named Joe, played by Berto Colón. He is the one who sends Ben up to the 13th floor on his first night. By episode 3 the guest list expands: Tate Langdon, Kai Anderson, Winter Anderson, Adelaide Langdon, and the Black Dahlia all pass through the same doors.
Constance is no longer tied to the Murder House. She has moved her operation — and apparently some of her dead children — into this new address. The Apollyon is her new base.
The Portal in the Basement
Episode 3, “Rauhnacht,” makes the building’s true nature explicit. After Constance’s holiday dinner, Winter, Kai, Tate and Adelaide take Elizabeth Short downstairs to a speakeasy called Club Hell. Waiting for them is Wilhemina Venable (Sarah Paulson’s second character of the season). She welcomes the group to what she calls a portal to Hell.
The revelation reframes everything that has happened on the 13th floor. Mr. Nas is not simply a wealthy, dying patient. He is living directly above a gateway. The black sludge he vomits, the patterned deaths of 13 people, and Constance’s collection of legendary dead women all sit on top of that portal.
Why the Building Matters
The Apollyon is the physical center of Season 13’s crossover. It is the place where Murder House characters, Cult characters, and the new mystery of Mr. Nas occupy the same space. It is also the place where the number 13 stops being a motif and becomes architecture.
Every major character who has appeared so far either lives in the building, works in the building, or is brought to the building. The plane crash delivered Ben there. The Rauhnacht ritual is staged there. The next episodes will almost certainly keep returning to those same halls.
In most seasons the haunted location is a character in its own right. The Apollyon is already acting like one. It has a name stolen from the end of the world, a floor that should not exist, and a basement that opens onto Hell. Whatever Mr. Nas is planning, he chose the perfect address for it.

Apollyon as More Than a Location
Naming the building after the angel of the bottomless pit is a statement. Previous seasons hid their evil in familiar American architecture — a Los Angeles house, a New Orleans academy, a corridor hotel. Season 13 puts the theological label on the front door. Residents and staff still behave as if it is a normal high-rise. That gap between name and daily life is classic American Horror Story tension.
The basement portal revealed in episode 3 turns the address into a vertical map of power: Nas above, Hell below, and Constance managing the space in between. Future episodes will likely keep returning to the same halls because the building is not a backdrop. It is the machine.
Why New York Matters
Moving the center of the story to New York also lets the show mix Murder House ghosts with NYC-era energy and a denser urban nightmare. The Apollyon sits in a city that never sleeps, which makes the 13th-floor rituals feel both hidden and public at once. When mass deaths happen elsewhere, the building still reacts. Distance does not protect anyone.
Living Above the Abyss
The most unsettling idea in the early episodes is ordinary domestic routine stacked on top of a portal. Constance bathes Nas. Ben takes a night shift. A doorman points visitors upstairs. None of that looks like a ritual until the basement door opens. Season 13 understands that horror hits harder when the supernatural is treated like property management. The Apollyon is valuable real estate for the dead and the damned alike.
