Three episodes in, and American Horror Story Season 13 already feels less like another anthology reset and more like the franchise finally admitting what fans have suspected for years: everything was always connected.

The first three chapters — “13,” “1:13 AM,” and “Rauhnacht” — do not simply drop familiar faces into a new story. They start stitching timelines, locations, and characters that once lived in separate seasons into one unfolding supernatural crisis centered on a New York apartment building called the Apollyon and a mysterious 87-year-old man named Mr. Nas.
Here is the clearest map yet of how the seasons are colliding after the three-episode premiere.
The Plane Crash That Starts Everything
The season opens with Ben DeSoto, a hospice caregiver with a deep fear of the number 13. His girlfriend Kira, a Taylor Swift superfan, insists on a birthday trip involving the number. Ben sits in seat 13F. Another passenger sits in 13B. The plane goes down. Kira and twelve others die. Ben survives.
That crash is not just a shocking cold open. It is the first hard link to the number that will keep killing throughout the early episodes. At the exact moment of the crash, Mr. Nas is shown coughing up a strange black substance in his penthouse. The show is already telling us these events are not coincidental.
Murder House Comes to New York
A month later, Ben arrives at the Apollyon and meets Constance Langdon on the 13th floor. Jessica Lange’s iconic neighbor from Murder House is no longer stuck next door to the Harmon house in Los Angeles. She is living freely in Manhattan, caring for Nas, and claiming that all of her children are “alive and thriving.”
That single line lands like a grenade. Adelaide Langdon (Jamie Brewer) walks back into the story in this mortal coil. Tate Langdon (Evan Peters) appears at the same gathering. Constance is gathering her family — and more — for a purpose that becomes clearer in episode three.
Freak Show and Cult Walk Through the Same Door
While Ben explores Nas’s penthouse and finds thirteen figures in a Last Supper painting, the story cuts to Los Angeles. Twisty the Clown from Freak Show walks into a clown school and massacres thirteen people, including a teacher played by Tig Notaro.
At the same time, Nas vomits the black substance again. The parallel is deliberate. Deaths tied to the number 13 are happening in different cities while the old man in the penthouse reacts physically. The show is linking the body count to Nas in real time.
Then Kai Anderson from Cult shows up at Constance’s dark holiday party, helping decorate a black Christmas tree topped with a pentagram. Evan Peters plays both Tate and Kai in the same scene. Winter Anderson arrives with a masked guest who turns out to be Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia from Murder House.
Coven and Apocalypse Open the Portal
Before the Apollyon even appears, the first episode flashes to Miss Robichaux’s Academy. Cordelia Goode and Madison Montgomery are training a new witch named Ophelia when Cordelia senses “so much vengeful death” and says the words that have always meant trouble in this universe: “Something wicked this way comes.”
In episode three, the holiday Constance is celebrating is revealed as Rauhnacht, the nights when the veil between Earth and Hell is thinnest. The younger guests — Winter, Kai, Tate, and Adelaide — take the Black Dahlia downstairs to a speakeasy called Club Hell.
In the basement of the Apollyon, Wilhemina Venable from Apocalypse greets them. Sarah Paulson’s second character of the season welcomes them to what she calls a portal to Hell. The building Ben thought was just a strange hospice job sits directly above a gateway.
One Universe, Multiple Timelines
Leslie Grossman, who is set to return as Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt, put it plainly in interviews: it is one big universe with many different timelines, and the writers have taken care to make those timelines intersect in ways that feel satisfying for longtime fans.
Ryan Murphy has described the season as the Avengers of American Horror Story — former villains and heroes united against a force bigger than the Antichrist. After three episodes, that force still has no face, but every sign points toward Mr. Nas and whatever is feeding on the number 13.
What the First Three Episodes Actually Set Up
The Apollyon is not just a location. It is a vertical map. Nas lives at the top. Constance moves between floors, collecting people. Club Hell and the portal sit underneath. Ben is stuck in the middle, still thinking he is only a caregiver.
Characters from Murder House, Freak Show, Cult, Coven, and Apocalypse are no longer visiting each other’s seasons. They are sharing the same rooms, the same ritual, and the same countdown to thirteen.
The question is no longer whether the seasons connect. The question is what Constance and the others plan to do with the thirteen “lucky leading ladies” once the veil is fully open.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is American Horror Story Season 13 a Coven sequel?
No. Ryan Murphy has been clear that it is not a Coven story. It pulls characters and mythology from every season and treats them as part of one shared universe with intersecting timelines.
Why is Constance Langdon living in New York?
She is no longer bound to the Murder House. In Season 13 she lives on the 13th floor of the Apollyon and appears to be orchestrating the gathering of characters for a larger plan involving Rauhnacht and the portal below.
What is the connection between Mr. Nas and the number 13 deaths?
Every major death cluster tied to the number 13 so far — the plane crash and the clown school massacre — is timed with Nas reacting physically, including coughing or vomiting a black substance. The show is building a direct link, but has not fully explained it yet.
Is the Apollyon a portal to Hell?
The basement of the building contains what Wilhemina Venable calls a portal to Hell. Club Hell operates there. The Apollyon itself appears to sit above the gateway rather than being Hell in its entirety.
When do the next episodes of American Horror Story Season 13 air?
Three more episodes drop on October 1, 2026. The season continues with two episodes most Thursdays until the finale on October 29.
American Horror Story Season 13 is not asking fans to remember every detail from twelve previous seasons. It is showing them, room by room and body by body, that the details were never separate in the first place.
