Queenie is no longer the outsider trying to prove she belongs inside Miss Robichaux’s Academy. In American Horror Story Season 13 she has moved into a position of real power, and she is finally leaning into the part of her heritage the other witches never fully understood.
Queenie’s voodoo turn is a power correction
Gabourey Sidibe’s Queenie returning with a clearer voodoo identity in American Horror Story Season 13 is not a side quest. It reconnects Coven’s unfinished conversation about lineage, debt, and who gets to claim spiritual authority after the Supreme’s wars. When Queenie names the demonic energy in the room, she is doing what the franchise sometimes forgets: letting a survivor narrate the threat instead of only reacting to it.

Gabourey Sidibe has made that shift clear in recent interviews. Queenie is older, closer to the Supreme, and more interested in the voodoo side of her abilities than any other witch in the house. For a character who once called herself a human voodoo doll, the evolution feels both natural and overdue.
From Student to Mentor
Sidibe described the change in status directly. “Certainly she is much older, and I think she has more of a position of power around the coven now,” she said. “She’s not a student anymore. She’s much closer to a teacher. She’s a mentor, and she’s basically on staff with the Supreme, working side by side with the Supreme to rear up other young witches. So, she’s definitely in a place of power.”
That places Queenie beside Cordelia rather than beneath her. The young woman who once worked the fry station and struggled to trust the Salem witches is now helping raise the next generation. The shift matters because Season 13 is already framed as a crisis large enough to force former enemies into the same fight. A Queenie who holds institutional power is a different force than the Queenie who once left the Academy for Marie Laveau’s side.
The Voodoo Side of Her Dollness
Queenie’s signature power has always been injury transference. She can hurt herself and make the wound appear on someone else. In Coven she framed that ability as being a human voodoo doll. She also claimed descent from Tituba, the enslaved woman linked to both voodoo practice and the Salem trials.
Sidibe confirmed that Season 13 explores that heritage more deeply. “This season we see that she is much more interested in the voodoo side of her dollness, if that makes sense,” she said. “We get to see how her taste and magic have grown.”
In another interview she added that Queenie is “probably a lot more interested in voodoo than every other witch in the house.” That interest is her connection outside the Academy. While the other witches focus on the powers practiced inside the house, Queenie carries an extra current that reaches beyond Salem tradition.
Why the Shift Matters for the Larger Story
Season 13 is not a pure Coven sequel, but the witches are still central to the response against the ultimate evil. Marie Laveau is returning specifically to help prepare them. Queenie’s growing alignment with voodoo creates a natural bridge between the Academy and the older power that Marie represents.
It also gives Queenie a personal stake that is no longer purely about survival or acceptance. She has survived death at the Hotel Cortez, resurrection by the Antichrist, and the end of the world. What remains is the question of which tradition she will fully claim when the threat sits above the Antichrist’s pay grade.
The John Waters Scene
Sidibe also teased an “unforgettable” scene with John Waters, who plays the doctor who draws thirteen vials of blood from Mr. Nas and keeps live snakes in his bag. She said Waters feels as if he has always belonged in this world. The pairing of Queenie’s evolved magic with Waters’ particular brand of extremity is one of the early signals that Season 13 is willing to mix registers in ways the earlier witch stories did not.
What Has Not Yet Appeared On Screen
Queenie has not played a major role in the first three episodes. The premiere focused on Ben, Constance, Nas, and the Rauhnacht gathering. That absence is consistent with the way the season is structured. The Apollyon storyline is being established first. The witches’ response, including Queenie’s new position and deeper voodoo interest, is still ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Queenie in American Horror Story Season 13?
Yes. Gabourey Sidibe is reprising the role. She has confirmed that Queenie is older, more powerful within the coven, and more focused on the voodoo side of her abilities.
What does “the voodoo side of her dollness” mean?
Queenie’s core power lets her transfer self-inflicted injuries onto other people, which she has always described as being a human voodoo doll. Sidibe said Season 13 explores the voodoo roots of that power more directly and shows how Queenie’s taste and magic have grown.
Is Queenie still a student at Miss Robichaux’s?
No. Sidibe said she is no longer a student. She functions closer to a teacher or mentor and works side by side with the Supreme.
Does Queenie still have a connection to Marie Laveau?
Queenie once left the Academy for Marie’s side in Coven. With both characters returning and Queenie leaning further into voodoo, that earlier connection is likely to matter again, though the exact relationship in Season 13 has not yet been shown.
Has Queenie appeared in the first three episodes?
She has not had a major presence in the premiere episodes. Her larger role is expected in later chapters as the witches respond to the threat centered on the Apollyon.
Queenie spent her early seasons proving she belonged in a house that was never fully designed for her. Season 13 appears ready to let her stop proving and start choosing. The choice she is making is the one that always sat closest to her blood: the voodoo side of the doll.
